Social isolation is a significant problem for older people in our local rural communities, with many having no meaningful contact with another human being for several weeks at a time. This isolation and loneliness can be as harmful and life limiting as smoking or obesity, it reduces quality of life and puts additional burdens on the NHS.
Using the creative arts as a focus, the Creative Ageing programme brings together older people who are socially isolated. Our minibus, which has disabled access, can pick up and drop off participants from their homes. No one needs artistic talent, just a willingness to try something new or to explore long forgotten skills. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, and activities include:
- Felting, using wool from our own alpacas
- Knitting, using wool from our own angora goats and Swiss Valais sheep
- Collage using natural materials from around the farm
